Tradition and modernity in a protected 19th century building
The object of this interior design project was a 42-room hotel housed in a building brimming with history and located on Comedias street in the historic centre of Málaga. The construction preserves a strong flavour of local traditional architecture from the 19th century and is officially protected by the town hall, which is why we had to preserve the building’s main areas and elements. This starting point was a challenge as we had to integrate the new into the old.
To preserve the character, the intention was to design a modern interpretation of tradition. We accentuated existing elements through lighting techniques and traditional finishes while adding modern minimalist furniture to provide contrast and bring personality. In the common areas there is a variety of traditional elements such as the entrance covered in traditional mosaic, the central courtyard surrounded by elaborate columns, and the classic staircase that leads to the bedrooms.
In addition, as we enter the rooms, the presence of existing traditional elements merges with careful carpentry work on the walls and doors, plaster mouldings on the ceilings, and marble-effect porcelain tiles on the floor.
