Valencia

Mixed accommodation in a former cinema

This interior design project was aimed at creating a hotel and a youth hostel with a total of 54 rooms. The accommodation is located in the city centre of Valencia and is housed in a former abandoned cinema. Because of the location and extent of refurbishment needed for the building, the type of guest is twofold, defined in part by the construction. The hotel has two buildings, one in front and one in back, each intended for different types of guests: private or business, and families and young people in line with the youth hostel concept. The youth hostel area consists of rooms with bathrooms. The rooms are equipped with bed bunks and have access to a small kitchen and a shared office. The services are rounded out with larger spaces for relaxation and working.

Based on these conditions and considering the city’s main characteristics- modern architecture, outdoor living, and the tradition of industrial ceramics- we created a design with a subtle reference to the cinema of past eras. Modern architecture is reflected in the opening up of spaces, in the use of modern materials similar to concrete, and in minimalist interiors. Outdoor living is replicated in the garden behind the building and with the introduction of outdoor plants indoors. A touch of traditional industrial ceramics can be seen in the use of artisanal ceramic latticework on the walls and ceilings in the reception, and of the colourful green tiles in the bar, bathrooms, and showers in the rooms. Lastly, signage, lighting in the corridors, and artistic decoration are all cinema-inspired.
